The "theory of relativity" actually refers to two theories developed by Albert Einstein in the early 1900s.
The special theory of relativity deals with departures from Newtonian mechanics when the speed of an object approaches or becomes comparable to the speed of light.
The general theory of relativity deals with departures from Newtonian mechanics by describing the warping of space and time in the vicinity of massive objects.
