Questionable to start lemma/article with other than most common meaning

The most basic context, I believe, of Crete, is a fairly detailed geographic discussion, and, quite possibly, modern politics and economics. Lemmas are intended to be focused, not a substitute for stubs.

I can argue that the modern military significance of Crete, as in the costly German paratroop attack that conquered the island but destroyed the German airborne force, or its more recent use as an intelligence and special operations base both in the Cold War and in counterterror, will also be a search criterion.

Don't misunderstand -- the mythological aspects are also important, but I think the better way to present this is, minimally, a lemma with well-developed Related Articles to contextualize, or a starter article with multiple headings, as I'm about to do. --Howard C.
