Born in Cape Town in 1949. Matriculated at Sea Point Boys' High and thereafter obtained the degrees BA and LlB from the University of Cape Town, and also an LTCL (Performing) in organ.

Has practised at the Cape Bar as an advocate (barrister) since 1977, taking silk in 1993.

Has also held the posts of organist and choirmaster at St Michael's Church, Observatory, since 1972. See www.stmichael.org.za

Has written music reviews for the Cape Argus and Cape Times newpapers, for the latter since 1978 as its principal reviewer of orchestral concerts and operas.
