Unless th eterminology has changed recently, pieces refers to KQRBN, not pawns, & the general term is men.

I've deleted the reference to the Digha Nikaya, as it's a mistranslation. It simply refers to 8-square boards & there's no reason to interpret it as referring to a game not otherwise attested until centuries later. I think Murray makes this point. Peter Jackson 12:02, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
