Prokaryote, from the Greek pro, before, and karyon, meaning nut or kernal. Prokaryotic cells are distinctively simpler than Eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic cells lack a distinct membrane bound nucleus and lack membrane bound organelles. All bacteria are prokaryotes.
