Career: software engineer, three jobs (five companies) over the last 21 years. Several languages and types of software. Other activities: gardening for a dry climate, refereeing soccer (in season; children's league). Former activities: bicycling, square dancing, car maintenance.

Education: mostly in England, culminating in a BA in Mathematics from Cambridge. Continued in California with a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford, with dissertation on rule-based programming. Interests: science fiction and fantasy, abstract art, jazz, military history, politics, development of human species, technologies, and cultures. Religion: not.
