The Missisippi River is the second longest river in the United States, with total length of about 3770 km. It originates in Lake Itasca in Minnesota and flows mainly north-south through the heart of the country before emptying itself in the Gulf of Mexico. With the Missouri, it forms the world's fourth longest river system.
