Ceres is a dwarf planet. It was classified as such when this new category was created by the IAU in 2006. When it was discovered in 1801, Ceres was classified as a planet, albeit a strangely small one; after the discovery of Pallas, Juno and Vesta, it was reclassified as the largest asteroid, which status it retains alongside its new one.
