Emeritus Professor of Engineering, Stanford University. Born in Torquay, England. BA Aeronautical Engineering, Cambridge University, 1957. Fellow of the Royal Society of London, 1981. Worked on research in fluid dynamics, mainly turbulence and experimental techniques, at National Physical Laboratory (England) 1957-1969; Department of Aeronautics, Imperial College, London University 1969-1988; Stanford University (Mechanical Engineering Dept. and Aeronautics and Astronautics Dept.) 1988 to date (Emeritus 1995). "Private" interests: history and literature of the ancient world, particularly Greece and Rome; and the English language.
