Welcome Page

Welcome to the Citizendium! We hope you will contribute boldly and well. Here are pointers for a quick start. You'll probably want to know how to get started as an author. Just look at CZ:Getting Started for other helpful "startup" links, and CZ:Home for the top menu of community pages. Be sure to stay abreast of events via the Citizendium-L (broadcast) mailing list (do join!) and the blog. Please also join the workgroup mailing list(s) that concern your particular interests. You can test out editing in the sandbox if you'd like. If you need help to get going, the forums is one option. That's also where we discuss policy and proposals. You can ask any constable for help, too. Me, for instance! Just put a note on their "talk" page. Again, welcome and have fun! D. Matt Innis 18:42, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi, and thanks for approving my request! Joseph Krol 19:53, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
Hi, Joseph, and welcome. Now that your bio is up here, you might consider rewriting it a bit so that it addresses a person wanting to find out who you are. Just a suggestion. Ro Thorpe 22:27, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
I've done that now, a bit. Thanks for the suggestion! Joseph Krol 16:01, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
Yes, that's much better. Thanks! Ro Thorpe 16:07, 22 October 2011 (UTC)

Your edits

Hello Joseph. It's great to see you contribute here, and before you go on further I'd like to let you know two things. First you shouldn't use Wikipedia as a "reference" unless it is an article about Wikipedia. Second you shouldn't create articles if they will merely be a few sentences long, and you won't make them any lengthier in the short-term. I hope these make sense. Thanks and keep on editing! (Chunbum Park 21:42, 22 October 2011 (UTC))

These would need to either be deleted or reworked further. The Wikipedia reference should be removed immediately, and the articles should be worked on and made lengthier and comprehensive, unless you are absolutely sure you will be working on them later. (Chunbum Park 21:51, 22 October 2011 (UTC))
Bristol is not okay because it has no useful info. "A city in UK. Population 250,000." It should be deleted or improved in order to remain a lemma article. Thanks. (Chunbum Park 22:08, 22 October 2011 (UTC))
Thank you for the tips. I will improve the stubs at some point soon. Joseph Krol 08:00, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
I think I've done all of them now. I added a bit about transport on all.

Welcome Joseph!

Hi Joseph! I've spotted your recent contributions and just wanted to add my welcome to CZ.

I've read West Yorkshire - good job!

I see you've already gotten some good advice from Ro and Chunbum. May I expand a little?

A little history about the writing of stubs: Our general policy is to encourage people to write to the full extent and limit of their knowledge on a subject, rather than just to put down a sentence or two with random statistics. That latter approach seems to work well at wikis with thousands or hundreds of thousands of users, where somebody will come along and expand on one's work within just a few hours. Here at CZ, it's been consistently upheld that the emphasis should be on quality rather than quantity. In fact, several years ago, some people said we shouldn't allow 'stubs' at all. The final consensus, though, was that stubs were okay as long as you wrote a really good stub.

Chunbum has pointed you to the subpages template, and obviously you're a quick learner. You can find some pointers in the 'Dive in!' section of the left hand menu. If you have any problems with the subpages format or the metadata form, just leave a note on the TALK page of the article, or at the forums, or feel free to contact any member of the EC if you need to. In fact, feel free to leave a note on my talk page any time!

I don't think I can add anything else, except that you're doing fine and we're very glad to have you here!

Cheers!

p.s. You'll notice that Chunbum added 'subpages' to the top of the West Yorkshire format, then I filled in the metadata form, and you can see how that expanded it into what we call a 'cluster'. I think you're going to love the cluster format when you get used to it, one can really get creative, and it sounds from your bio that that's exactly what you want to do. Keep up the good work

Welcome, Joseph, and thanks for making edits here and working with other people. I thought your userpage comment about why people should edit here was very good, i.e. that there are already a lot of people on Wikipedia and therefore anyone editing here is likely to have a breathing space to develop an article without people constantly reverting it or deleting things. Here, we generally expect at least an explanation in the edit history of why something has been removed, and for very significant changes, prior Talk page discussion. Keep it up, and if you require assistance, please visit my Talk page. John Stephenson 12:00, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Age of the Earth

Hello Joseph. Welcome to Citizendium. We look forward to your continuing contributions. I made a few edits to the Age of the Earth article you started, just to give you a few ideas of how you can use the wiki editor for various effects, though you may already know them. The age of the Earth is an interesting subject. I hope you will continue working on the article as time permits. Don't hesitate to contact any of us old-timers if you have questions or ideas you want to talk about. Anthony.Sebastian 03:35, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
