Arminius (c.18 BC — 19 AD) was a Cherusci chieftain whose Germanic army defeated three Roman legions under Publius Quinctilius Varus at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD. The German victory seriously disrupted Roman imperial designs on territory east of the Rhine. Despite his success as a commander, Arminius was murdered by his own people. Tacitus assessed him as liberator haud dubie Germaniae ("unquestionably the liberator of Germany").
