A yacht is a recreational water vessel. There are two distinct meanings of the term. The first is one of a number of types of sailing boat used in competitive racing or yacht racing. The second refers, more generically, to a luxurious vessel for private use; while most luxury yachts are moderately sized, some "superyachts" are of ship size. The America's Cup is the world's best-known yacht race.
Yacht racing has been an Olympic sport since 1896 although, because of bad weather, no races were held then and the sport was first contested at the 1900 Games. There are several events for both men and women.
