I am a retired chemical engineer and would like permission to use the Met Office logo in an article that I am writing on the Met Office for inclusion in the Citizendium. A copy of the photo is attached and it was obtained from your website page at http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/corporate/pressoffice/anniversary/timeline.html

Citizendium is a non-profit, free online encyclopedia. Volunteer editors, including university professors and other experts, review all articles before they receive final approval. Volunteer authors, like myself, must be vetted and approved before they can contribute any articles and all authors must use their real names. You may visit the Citizendium at http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Main_Page to learn more. You may also view two of the articles which I have written in the Citizendium: http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/U.S._Environmental_Protection_Agency and http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/European_Environment_Agency.

If you would grant us the permission to use the logo as a public educational service, we would be most grateful. We would prefer the logo be released under a Creative Commons (CC) license ( see http://creativecommons.org/license/ ), but will gladly accept the terms with which you are most comfortable.

Your logo will be viewable worldwide and will be conspicuously labeled "CC Photo: Met Office (UK) ". If at any time in the future you request the logo's removal, such request will be honored.

Assuming that permission is granted, I will need to receive an email signed by you stating that permission is granted.

Dear Milton

Thank you for your e-mail.

I do not foresee any problem with the Met Office granting this request for copyright permission, but we do have a formal process where customers fill out a licence application for re-use and then the IPR team process this request. We cannot release our logo under a Creative Commons (CC) license as it subject to British Crown copyright.

At the Met Office we aim to allow re-use of our information/images for no or as little cost as possible. But all these factors are assessed after we have received the licence application. It is a very simple process and should not take a long time.

In order for us to grant permission please complete our on-line reproduction licence form. It can be found at: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/corporate/legal/repro_licence.html.

Once you have completed the reproduction licence application I can then forward on the latest version of our logo and a guide for using it on the web.

Please accept this e-mail as permission to reproduce the Met Office logos. Please note that the logos are registered trademarks, protected in the European Union, UK, USA and other countries. Any permissions granted by this email are thus restricted to the purpose mentioned in the 'HowUsed' section of your form.

Please find the following Met Office logos attached:

MO Master Black.jpg - This is the main Met Office logo and is our preferred format. It is for reproduction on dark backgrounds. This logo should never be reproduced in a size under 10mm wide and should always appear in an area clear of all other information. The clear area is defined by the 'M' of the Met Office logotype.

MO Master White.jpg - This version of the Met Office logo is for reproduction on light backgrounds. This logo should never be reproduced in a size under 10mm wide and should always appear in an area clear of all other information. The clear area is defined by the 'M' of the Met Office logotype.

MO Landscape B.jpg - This logo should be used for extreme formats - e.g. on a pen or the spine of a document. It can also be used on TV.
