This list includes popes and significant antipopes (there are a couple of dozen antipopes at the present day, but their followings are minute). The first column | This list includes popes and significant antipopes (there are a couple of dozen antipopes at the present day, but their followings are minute). The main source is the official ''Annuario pontificio'' (2012 edition). In particular, its judgments, or suspensions of judgment, are followed in the first column distinguishing between popes and antipopes, with question marks where status is uncertain. Blanks in this column are to be understood as the same as the last non-blank entry above them. Where two or three dates are given for the beginning of a reign, without "or" connecting them, they are dates of election, ordination and coronation. Under current canon law, if the man elected is already a bishop, he becomes pope from the instant of his formal acceptance of election; otherwise from ordination as a bishop. This may not always have been true in the past, but ''AP'' does not go into details. Information for the first two centuries is historically uncertain. ''AP'' gives names in Italian; translations here are not always unique. | ||

This list includes popes and significant antipopes (there are a couple of dozen antipopes at the present day, but their followings are minute). The main source is the official Annuario pontificio (2012 edition). This may not always have been true in the past, but AP does not go into details. Information for the first two centuries is historically uncertain. AP gives names in Italian; translations here are not always unique.

Notes
- ↑ According to Catholic tradition, Peter spent the last 25 years of his life as Bishop of Rome, but had already been Pope, i.e. head of the universal church, for 9 years before that, first in Jerusalem and then in Antioch, making him the longest-reigning Pope so far (and, according to an old prophecy, ever), but Pius IX the longest-reigning Bishop of Rome
- ↑ the main text in AP lists him as antipope, but a footnote says he might be legitimate
- ↑ Silverius was deposed by the secular power, whose authority to do this is not recognized; the main text of AP gives 29 March as the beginning of Vigilius' reign, but the footnotes say he became legitimate only after Silverius' apparent renunciation later in the year, by his recognition by the Roman clergy
- ↑ Martin was deposed before his death, on June 17, 653; the main text of AP lists Martin 649-55, Eugenius 654-7, thus giving two simultaneous popes for 654-5; a footnote states that Martin apparently did not object to Eugenius' appointment
- ↑ another Stephen had been elected immediately before him, but died before consecration; under the canon law of the time he was therefore never pope, and is generally omitted from lists
- ↑ Leo V is believed to have died in 904, possibly by murder; however, he had been deposed in 903.
- ↑ deposed by a church council on the latter date; the main text of AP lists John XII 955-64, Leo VIII 963-5, Benedict V 964 to 964 or 965, John XIII 965-72; thus it implies simultaneous popes for at least 963-4; the footnotes, however, imply that the succession of legitimate popes was either John XII 955-63, Leo VIII 963-5, John XIII 965-72 or John XII 955-64, Benedict V 964 to 964 or 965, John XIII 965-72
- ↑ Pope Benedict V had been deposed before his death, on June 23, 964.
