In medicine, peripheral vascular disease is a "pathological processes involving any one of the blood vessels in the vasculature outside the heart."[1]

Classification

Arterial diseases

Arterial occlusive diseases are "pathological processes which result in the partial or complete obstruction of arteries. They are characterized by greatly reduced or absence of blood flow through these vessels. They are also known as arterial insufficiency."[2] Examples include peripheral arterial disease which may cause the symptoms of intermittent claudication.

Venous diseases

Venous diseases include thrombophlebitis and deep venous thrombosis (DVT), as well as their sequalae postphlebitic syndrome, postthrombotic syndrome, varicose veins, and venous stasis ulcer.
