I'm not convinced this is a completely logical definition. My inclination would be to split into:
*1978-1989 (Soviets leave)
**Charlie Wilson would fit here as [[Operation CYCLONE]]
*Afghan civil war 1989-1992 (Taliban take control)
*[[Taliban]] period 1992-2001
*[[Afghanistan War (2001-2021)]]
**[[Afghanistan War (2001-2021), major combat phase]]
**[[International Security Assistance Force]] (I'd really like a better name for the current situation, especially with an Afghan government)
