The Algoma Intrepid is the second ship in Algoma Central's Equinox class.[1]

At 650 feet vessels of the Equinox class are shorter than the Seawaymax length of 730 feet.[1] In addition these vessels mount their self-unloading boom from their bows, not from their stern superstructure. Both of these design choices make it easier for them to use smaller harbors, and to poke their boom over unloading places that would be harder to reach with a stern-mounted boom. Cleveland's harbor facilities lie on the relatively narrow and winding Cuyoga River.
