Born in Manhattan 1965; raised in France and Italy. "Liceo" degree in Classics in Milano, BA in Physics from Reed College, PhD in Physics from Stony Brook. Work in Los Alamos as a research scientist.

In my research in Physics I have been a key developer of the HETE and HETE-II gamma-ray-burst (GRB) satellite missions, as well as contributing to the Swift GRB mission. I have also worked in radio/ionospheric physics, developing the Los Alamos lightning detection array; in magnetospheric physics and space weather; in gamma-ray radiography imaging; and in general relativity and cosmology.

Apart from my research in Physics I have also worked in various areas of computer science and software engineering (machine learning; embedded operating systems). I have contributed to the GNU project since its inception in the 1980s. My most notable contribution is conceiving, designing and kicking off the GNU Scientific Library.
