Even in medicine proper, critical care is an interdisciplinary field. While perhaps the most common background for a hospital intensivist is anesthesiology, trauma surgeons, for example, run a "Trauma and Critical Care" mailing list. Critical care also extends into emergency medicine and field medicine.

Beyond medicine, biomedical engineering is essential to making many ideas of critical care usable by other than their inventors. How many devices once took several experts and were fixed or barely movable, but now conveniently go into an ambulance or can be carried by emergency medical technicians?
