Darwinian transition

Darwinian transition [r]: A term proposed by Carl Woese to describe a transition period during the evolution of cells when genetic transmission moved from a predominantly horizontal mode to a vertical mode. After this life is characterised by genealogies that have a more modern tree-like phylogeny. ^[e]
