The Panama Canal is a canal that allows vessels to cross the Isythmus of Panama, traveling from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, or the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean.
The current canal is the second attempt. France tried, and failed, to build a canal at a different location.
The current canal required the dams to create an artificial lake, Lake Gatun, to store the water to cycle the canal's locks.
