L. delbrueckii is a gram positive bacteria. It is long, filamentous and non-motile.
The environment in which L. delbrueckii thrives the most would be one of relatively low pH. L. delbrueckii and lactobacilli in general undergo homofermtentative metabolism which means they are only able to ferment lactose and no other sugar.
It has complex nutritional requirements, including the inability to ferment any sugar except for lactose. This bacterium is also regarded as aciduric or acidphilic, due to the fact that it requires a relatively low pH (around 5.4-4.6) in order to grow effectively.
