Where the Wikipedia article seems to fall down is that assertions are often made that aren't backed up by references. A reasonable place to start therefore seems to be with the results of published studies - and ideally with systematic reviews where there is enough to go on. Titles (and often abstracts) for most published hypnosis research is available from http://www.hypnosis-research.org Ideas about structure for the article:

Definition

State vs. non-state (hypnosis as an altered state of consciousness)

Specificity of suggestions (describe range of alterations in sensation + perception)

Theories (Neo-dissociation theory, dissociated control theory...)

Neuroimaging findings

Clinical hypnosis
