A synonym in taxonomy is an alternative name for a taxons' taxonomic classification. The synonyms can be based on the same underlying name-bearing type called an objective or nomenclatural or homotypic synonym, or it can be be based on a different name-bearing type called a subjective or taxonomic or heterotypic synonym.
