VIEW THIS PAGE IN FIREFOX. THE BUGS FOR IMAGE DISPLAY WITH THIS METHOD IN INTERNET EXPLORER ARE NOT WORKED OUT YET.
This page is to provide concrete examples of how various public domain images would be credited in Citizendium articles. Below is both the image and an explanation of its circumstances, which explains why its corresponding image is credited as it is.
Some of the explanations are ones we will encounter, but the image displayed is just a filler—obviously.
NOTES:
- Freely available at the collection website.
- Author unknown, or at least info is not available at image source
- Portrait is a unique donation, part of a large collection, by Bern Dibner to the The Smithsonian Institute, Dibner Library Portrait Collection, and held only there.
- An image held physically only at the Acme Collection
- Image is not available online. Acme charges $50 one-time to non-profits to use the image, and $50/year for it to be displayed on a website
- The Media Assets Workgroup has negotiated the fees away. To do so, it showed its system wide practice of crediting in credit lines and promised the same.
post]
- Canadian public domain
- Freely available at the collection website
- Author is Lachlan T. Burwash
- Portrait is a unique donation, held only by Library and Archives Canada.
- Recent photo by a specific, known author
- Presumed that author would not want credit, hence the PD release
- From a rare book held physically in 3 or 4 places around the world, digitized in 2005 by Google Books and placed on the web for all
- Image is a screen capture by —Stephen Ewen (Talk) from the Google Books version
- Known places physically held:
- Harvard University, from which the Google Book was made
- The private library of retired professor Bob Corbett, a Haitianist scholar. Corbett is known by Ewen and Corbett invites anyone with interest to visit his St. Louis library, the largest of Haitianist material in the U.S.
- How shall this be credited? Consider use of the word "via" as suggested by User:David Shapinsky at this forum post
