Welcome to the Citizendium! We hope you will contribute boldly and well. Here are pointers for a quick start. You'll probably want to know how to get started as an author. Just look at CZ:Getting Started for other helpful "startup" links, and CZ:Home for the top menu of community pages. Be sure to stay abreast of events via the Citizendium-L (broadcast) mailing list (do join!) and the blog. Please also join the workgroup mailing list(s) that concern your particular interests. You can test out editing in the sandbox if you'd like. If you need help to get going, the forums is one option. That's also where we discuss policy and proposals. You can ask any constable for help, too. Me, for instance! Just put a note on their "talk" page. Again, welcome and have fun! D. Matt Innis 01:06, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

You've been Nominated!

Someone has nominated you for a position in the new Citizendium. They have noticed you're dedication to the project and like what they see. To be listed on the ballot for the position, it is necessary that you accept the nomination on the [[Archive:Citizendium Ballot for the Management Council|Nomination page]. Just place accept next to your name along with the four tildes. The nomination period will close at midnight October 7 (UTC). Article 54 of the new charter details the requirements:

Article 54

  • In conjunction with the Declaration of the Editor-in-Chief regarding the effectivity of this Charter, there shall be a call for nominations for the following offices: Managament Council (five seats), Editorial Council (seven seats), Managing Editor (one), Ombudsman (one). This shall be the effective date of the Charter.
  • Any Citizen may nominate candidates for these positions.
  • Nominations shall be collected and collated by the Chief Constable.
  • Nominations shall be accepted no more than fourteen days after the effective date of the charter; the ballot shall be available starting on the twentieth day after the effective date of the charter; the election shall be completed no more than twenty-eight days after the effective date of the charter; all elected officials shall begin their term of office on the thirtieth day after the effective date of the charter.
  • Only candidates who accept their nomination shall be eligible to appear on the ballot. Nominated candidates can accept nominations for no more than two official functions. Accepting a nomination serves as a declaration of commitment, in the case of being elected, to fulfill this function until the limit of the term.
  • All positions shall be elected by a simple majority of the voting citizenry. In the case of a tie, an immediate run-off election shall be held.
  • In the event that a candidate has been elected for two functions, the candidate shall declare which one he or she accepts within three days of announcement of the election results. In the event that such a declaration has not been made during this period, the candidate shall be considered elected for the position for which the nomination was accepted first. The same procedure applies to a reserve member that becomes elected by a seat being vacated this way.

If you would like to make a statement to help voters, click the "Statement" link to the right of your name.

Thanks again for the commitment you're making to assure that Citizendium becomes the premier quality online source we all have envisioned.

Please Revote

There has been a mistake on the Management Council Ballot. Howard C. Berkowitz was left off this ballot. Please recast your vote for Management Council

Going cold turkey

Hi, Johan, could you take a look at: http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Talk:Roast_turkey#What_do_we_do_now_with_the_turkey_recipes.3F__Asking_for_opinions_and_thoughts.... and offer your considered opinion when you have a moment? Many thanks! Hayford Peirce 22:10, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

Hayford, it seems I'm too late since you seem to already have reached consensus. If I were to make a comment, I am quite astonished by the time people seem to be willing to devote to discussing roast turkey. I'm starting to see a pattern where a new article is started, the whole issue is inflated to gigantic proportions, ending in novel-size talk pages that take the better part of an hour to read, and certainly a lot more to write. UFO, Ruben sandwhich, Marian Apparitions, Roast Turkey. I'm not sure what to make of this, but I doubt it is time well spent working on Citizendium. Johan A. Förberg 10:43, 21 October 2010 (UTC)

More about Acid rain

Johan, take a look at my user Talk page (at the very bottom). Anthony Sebastian has provided a number of links to material that will be helpful to you in drafting a new section about acid rain in other countries.

I will be very busy with our CZ funds donations drive over the next few days. Then I will be available to collaborate with you on the new section that you proposed. Milton Beychok 23:58, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi, Johan: Just a gentle reminder about the section you were going to write for the Acid rain article. Milton Beychok 20:34, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
Hi! I'm sorry I have not written anything on that section: I've been rather tied up recently. I'm going to sit down tomorrow and write something up. Johan A. Förberg 23:23, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
That's fine, as long as I have it by noon of November 16th (Tuesday), which is the day slated for final approval of the article. Remember, I am in the Pacific Standard Time Zone (California). If you want more time, please contact Anthony Sebastian, who nominated the article for approval, and ask him to extend the final approval date. Regards, Milton Beychok 23:42, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Re new section for Acid rain

Johan, let me know whether you'd like to extend the approval date a day or two, for your convenience and for time for review. Also, we could go ahead and approve as scheduled, add your section to the post-approval draft version, then just quickly re-approve. I'd be okay with either. Anthony.Sebastian 07:27, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

I don't think you need to extend the time. I think I can have a draft for the section ready tonight. Is one day enough for you editorial review? I gather CZ is running seven hours behind me (I'm in timezone GMT +1). Johan A. Förberg 16:31, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
Johan: Timezone values, meaningless gibberish to me. I'll check the article about 14 hours from now, namely I'll check on Tues a.m., 11/16/2010, at 9:00 a.m. PST. Or sooner. Hopefully we'll beat the automatic renewal step. Anthony.Sebastian 02:37, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Thanks

Johan, thanks for saving my undercarriage, re Oxytocin. Anthony.Sebastian 04:15, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

BTW: What drawing programs would you recommend for someone currently using only PowerPoint. Anthony.Sebastian 04:15, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

Anthony, no problem :)
Depending on what you need to do, I think you should take a look at the following:
  • Dia is a free drawing program which is especially useful for making diagrams and charts. I used it to make this animation (although this is probably a bad example of the program's capabilities.)
  • Inkscape is a free vector drawing program which gives the user almost total freedom, while being more complex than Dia. I used it to make this drawing.
So it all depends on what you would like to use it for. I don't have Powerpoint, so I'm how Dia compares to it. My best guess is that you should try Dia out. Have fun! Johan A. Förberg 09:26, 18 November 2010 (UTC) (formatting errors galore) 09:28, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks again, Johan. I'll give them both a try. Anthony.Sebastian 17:48, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

About changing the color of the Donation request on the Welcome page

This really a minor point. The reason for my having selected the previous color was so that it would stand out from the rest of the page on purpose ... rather than blend in with the rest of the page. I leave it up to you whether you want to re-consider your change of color. Regards, Milton Beychok 19:41, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Milton, perhaps I should have asked you before changing the colour. If you want to revert my edit, please go ahead.
My reason for changing the colour is that it matches the rest of the page (much) better. If you look around CZ, you will see mostly grey, black, white and some light blue. No offense, but shock cyan and light blue do not go very well together.
Still, we want to set the donations box apart from the rest of the content. Could you approve of something along these lines?
  • #CCCCFF - light blue (base colour)

Good decor colours, if one follows the Triade colour scheme:

  • #FFCCCC - light red

  • #CCFFCC - light green

Or even:

  • #FF8080 - more intense red

  • #80FF80 - more intense green

How about that background color of #80FF80? Milton Beychok 22:43, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

What do you think? If we make the background of the box coloured, we could attract attention without much disturbing the colour harmony of the main page. Johan A. Förberg 21:16, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

I've made the change. Please tell me what you think. Johan A. Förberg 23:12, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi

Johan, hello! I'm slowly worming back into CZ after a hiatus and saw that you made an edit on the Lisp article. So glad; it's been lonely in the Computers Workgroup. Seeing even a single edit makes me want to author some more. Thanks for working in here.Pat Palmer 09:40, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi Pat and thank you! My current work on the Editorial Council takes up some of the time I would otherwise have spent writing articles. I'm happy to continue writing for the Computers W. whenever I have time though! I've been meaning to learn the basics of LISP for some time, but I find it a very challenging language to learn. Valve Software

Hello Johan, it is nice to meet you. I see your edits in the recent changes page from time to time.

I noticed your change on the Left 4 Dead article regarding Valve's name. I will leave your change as is, but I thought I should at least mention that this is debatable, IMHO. While the website is indeed valvesoftware.com, I don't see hardly any other mention of the phrase "Valve Software", and the disclaimer at the bottom of the website still reads "© 2011 Valve Corporation". No big deal just thought it was worth mentioning. Cheers! Eric Clevinger 23:44, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

They used to be called Valve Software but now are called Valve Corporation. They are usually referred to as Valve. I would recommend using 'Valve Corporation' on the first mention and in the infobox, and then just 'Valve' thereafter. Valve Software is incorrect. --Chris Key 05:10, 16 March 2011 (UTC)
Just to be clear, I didn't write Valve Software anywhere. I changed the instances of Valve Corporation to Valve, and left Valve Software in place.
Despite having played several of their games, I never heard the name Valve Corporation being used. So I went to their website to check which name they used. It seemed to me (at a glance) that they consistently identified themselves as 'Valve', except in legal contexts such as the copyright notice you mentioned.
I think the name which is most commonly used by the company itself should be used here on CZ as well. I don't feel very strongly about it though. Johan A. Förberg 08:55, 16 March 2011 (UTC)
I agree, they do refer to themselves as Valve however their actual name is Valve Corporation. Hence my recommendation of using 'Valve Corporation' on the first mention and in the infobox, and then just 'Valve' thereafter. --Chris Key 18:45, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
I agree with Chris here: "Valve Corporation" first, then "Valve" thereafter. I think that both International Business Machines and Hewlett-Package have legally changed their names to IBM and HP, but if they *hadn't*, in articles about them I would use their full names for the first mention, then the initials thereafter. Hayford Peirce 19:12, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
Agreed. Johan A. Förberg 21:44, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Featured article

Hello Johan, thank you very much for the compliment. It's a lot of fun to read the articles and choose which to feature on our main page.

My summer program at RISD has ended, and I am returning home soon, so I will be able to edit again more often.

It's great to see Citizendium slowly come back to life. Thanks for doing your part at the EC. (Chunbum Park 23:31, 29 July 2011 (UTC))

Classical mechanics

Johan: I've made many changes to Classical mechanics and added three figures. The article could benefit from your attention. John R. Brews 12:50, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

John, sorry that I haven't responded until now. I'll certainly take a look at the article. It's fitting, since I've just finished two university courses in the subject. Johan Förberg 00:21, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
I've read the article and made some comments. If you agree, we can start working on it. Johan Förberg 00:54, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
