Caliphate

My Oxford Dictionary gives the form without the 'h' too, but Wikipedia spells it with an 'h' in its articles on both Caliph & Caliphate, so it's probably just an alternative transcription. Unfortunately there's so far no Arabic at CZ:International. Ro Thorpe 10:46, 25 February 2008 (CST)

Of course I only noticed the final ‘h’ – I blame the pesky italics… I googled around a bit, and it would seem that 'khilafah' is indeed the –ate version, as you suggested. Gonzales

Check out Gonzales now. I think I fixed it by editing the page. Sometimes the categories do not take after the metadata pages is changed until a minor edit to the article page helps resolves the categories. I'm not sure why that is the case. Chris Day 13:17, 5 May 2008 (CDT)

Townes Van Zandt

As a poet, I am sure you would love some of the lyrics of Townes Van Zandt. He was much more a poet and not such a good singer. Check out some lyrics on the web. The likes of Willy Nelson, John Prime, Lyle Lovett, EmmyLou Harris and many others have covered his tunes.

Look for these lyrics for a few good samples:

Bible books

As to move and delete: for delete, that has to be done by a CZ:Constable - see CZ:Article Deletion Policy for more. For moving - that's complex, I'm writing a page on how to do it, I'll let you know when it's done.

Dealing with duplicates

Hi, sorry I've been a bit slow responding to this - things have been crazy. Anyway...

I haven't actually cleared up many duplicate articles. Mostly what I've done is flagged a bunch of them. The thing is that dealing with a duplicate involves three steps:

• Deciding what the preferable title is
• Working out which article has the best content (i.e. should be saved as 'the' article on that topic)
• Seeing if there's any useful material to be salvaged from the other one, and doing the salvage

All of those really kind of need someone with expertise in that area. Plus to which it's a lot of work, and I'm lazy! So generally I just note it, and let the relevant editors deal with it (or ignore the situation, a common result).

As to what to do when you find a pair: what I've been doing (this is not policy - yet - just my take) is drop a note on each one's talk page, tagged with the template {{Duplicate}} (which takes as an argument the name of the other duplicate article). That adds them to Category:Duplicate articles, so they don't get lost, and lets the editors know they need to clean things up (see above). J. Noel Chiappa 15:22, 7 June 2008 (CDT)

Covers

In music, covers refers to "covering" someone elses music, ie one band/singer plays the music of another band. In general, music clubs pay a flat fee per year which allows them to play all ASCAP music, for example, and also a separate fee to the other company, but I can't think of their name at the moment. The fee is based on the size of the venue, and they don't keep track of each song played. Cover charge is still the term used when you pay $40 to hear a band play all original music too. It does work out to be the same thing as a dinner cover I suppose.

Speaking of music, I just spent the last few days at Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas. You should check out the Band of Heathens on the web. The band has 3 singer-songerwriters, a base player and a drummer. They are one of Austin's best bands right now. David E. Volk 00:54, 22 August 2008 (CDT)

Flexner something

Thanks for spotting that. I believe "Report" was the title of the document, and is in generally more common usage. The article itself needs some cleanup, as well as wikilinking to several related areas. Did you just spot the duplicate in passing, or is this subject of special interest? Greek letters

Bruce, I believe you should leave the "Greek" in. There will be readers who may not be familiar with any foreign letters and who will wonder where in the world the letters came from. After all, this is an encyclopedia and we should educate those readers.

As I wrote in the forum, I think the letters look much better if the LaTeX math letters are used. I revised the Gamma (disambiguation) page to use them ... what do you think? Milton Beychok 16:58, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Theta in Henry's Law

Bruce, I think you should just go ahead and define Theta as a Greek letter. I have changed the wording in that sentence in Henry's Law to delete the word "standard". There is no longer any universally accepted standard temperature and/or pressure ... as I've documented in Reference conditons of gas temperature and pressure. 298 K just happens to be the temperature at which a good bit of thermodynamic data appears to have been published at one time ... but it is not a universally accepted standard temperature. Thanks, I had a feeling I had missed something there, and that was a most interesting & indeed enlightening essay. I had no idea the Brits were subject to punctuation rationing. Perhaps I was born too late, in 1950, but I think I was already quite old, say 8 or 9, when I noticed that some publishers left out the stop after Mr & Mrs & Dr. Certainly in primary school we were instructed to expend the lead in our pencils, no matter how much it cost, on putting dots after docs. My mistake, possibly he started other articles too? If I were you I would do what you think is best. I dumped a whole load of ideas on the chess related articles page and was going to try and sort them into an overall theme/hierarchy. But don't be guided by the examples you see there. Sandbox

Hi Bruce, i saw your note on milts page. You can start any page in your user space as a sandbox. milt often starts writing his articles there before putting them into the main space. For example you could start User:Bruce M.Tindall/Sandbox or even User:Bruce M.Tindall/Article name. If you forget what you have created it is no problem. You can find then easily using the prefix special page and search for you name. All your user subpages will be found that way. How do you make a move (or rename)?

Bruce, I see that you recently moved or renamed a Rodgers and Hammerstein article. I am trying to learn how to make article moves. Enforcing conventions

I'd really appreciate your asking on the talk page before enforcing a singular not plural convention. In a number of cases, things are plural because the emphasis is on classes, not individual members of a class. This is not a simple change of grammatical number. "Nodes", for example, is a class of devices on computer networks, encompassing routers and hosts. For the singular, it would be more common to refer to a "host node" or "router node".

In other cases, as in pharmacology, the term "agents" is used to refer to a class; this is consistent with the National Library of Medicine Medical Subject Headings usage. Howard C. Berkowitz 19:40, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Transportation articles

In general, I think we've been using Engineering. That's been adequate for an exemplar of the technology, such as the Boeing 737 or DC-3 (airliner). For militarily significant highways, however, I've considered Geography to be the first group but also Military and sometimes History; that would probably fit mass transit (Geography & Engineering). Stand alone

Yes, stand alone related articles are allowed. See the following Category:Related_Articles_Only. I'm still experimenting with this concept but even stand alone masterlists are allowed. See Category:Masterlist Only as opposed to Category:Masterlists. Let me know if you have any ideas on how to improve on this concept. The way i figure it is that this gives us a more robust and maintainable navigation system. The articles can always come later. Chris Day 18:45, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

moves

There is a new procedure. i had to tweak it due to some changes in mediawiki and it is still not perfect, although for most cases it should work.

You can start from the test link at the top of the talk page, in the header near language variant.

1. link will take you to a move metadata template option.
2. Move template to new name but do not change the pagename field.
3. A message box should provide a hyperlink to move the article, talk and all subpages. All pages can be moved with one request now.
4. At top of article a message box will request you tag old approval page and the old metadata page for deletion (this is where it can get tricky under some scenarios, possibly not even possible)
5. Can now change the pagename field to the new name.

That should then complete the move. I hope this helps. I'll try and get this fixed so it is more predictable. Chris Day 20:47, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

New author in computers

No automatic alert -- thanks. Right now, I usually see new authors through "recent changes", but at some hopeful future time we will have enough to worry about automatic alert.

New member names for confirmed new users

Hi, Bruce:

Just for your information, I would have changed the user name of "Carmel richard" to either "Carmel Richard" or "Richard Carmel" or at least asked the applicant which to use ... I would not have left the lower case "r" in "richard".

I would also have changed "Sridharen RN" to "R.N. Sridharen" or have asked the applicant to clarify his submitted name.

I know that you have perhaps simply confirmed the names as submitted ... but many of our applicants from non-U.S. countries probably don't understand how to submit their name correctly or some may be so used to texting on mobile phones that they don't use capitalization properly or some have poor English skills.

Please don't be offended by my bringing this up ...but I feel that spending the time to email the applicant and get his/her correct real name will avoid subsequent problems. Regards, Milton Beychok 19:39, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
