Ryan O'Connell was born in Venice, Florida in 1985. He is a dual citizen, granted French citizenship from his French-Vietnamese mother and American citizenship from his father.

Ryan worked briefly at Tampa Bay Magazine and WEDU Tampa while living in Florida. He received a BA in Political Science from Tulane University in 2006, the first graduating class after Hurricane Katrina.

Ryan is a winemaker who owns and operates O'Vineyards near Carcassonne, France. He also runs MasterGrape.com, a web-based network of vineyards and winemaking facilities in the south of France.
