Graduated from the Japanese Studies Dept of St.Petersburg University in 1985 and defended his DPhil dissertation in Literary Theory at the University of Helsinki in 1994. Professor of Asian and Cultural Studies at Tallinn University and Professor of Japanese Studies at the University of Helsinki. For 2006-2011, Rector of Tallinn University. Published author (4 collections of poetry, 4 novels, 2 collections of stories), translator from various languages, publishes opinion pieces, essays, literary and art criticism mainly in Estonian media.
