Sylvester McCoy (born 20th August, 1943) is an Scottish actor of English and Irish descent, best known as the seventh to take on the lead role in the British science fiction series Doctor Who, from 1987 to 1989, returning briefly for a television movie in 1996. His role as 'the Doctor' was the first role to bring him to the attention of the public, garnering a mixed reception that eventually swung behind his portrayal, especially as it moved towards a 'darker' characterisation.

McCoy continues to appear extensively in the theatre and occasionally in film and television; he has also reprised his role as the Doctor for various audio dramas. His most notable recent work was as Radagast the Brown in the 2012 film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
