After the writing of a new constitution and a transfer of power from the U.S. Coalition Provisional Authority the state of Iraq is a parliamentary democracy. President Jalal Talabani is Head of State and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is head of government.

Presidency Council

In addition to the President, there are two Vice Presidents, Adil al-Mahdi and Tariq al-Hashimi making up the Presidency Council.

Legislature

There is a unicameral Council of Representatives, with 275 members elected by a closed-list, proportional representation system.
