Salman Awdah is an influential Saudi Arabia|Saudi cleric, who was among the first to call for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Saudi Arabia yet has also recently criticized al-Qaeda. He was imprisoned between 1994 and 1999 for his role in the Sahwa movement - "fiercely critical of the Saudi royal family, infuriated by the American role in the first Gulf War, and one of the pioneers of the Islamist use of cassette sermons." After a 2003 terrorist attack in Riyadh, however, he relented his anti-jihad position and joined in the Saudi campaign against extremist opposition. References
