Project for the New American Century

A neoconservative think tank and interest group, the Project for the New American Century was formed to preserve the foreign policy principles of the Reagan Administration: "a military that is strong and ready to meet both present and future challenges; a foreign policy that boldly and purposefully promotes American principles abroad; and national leadership that accepts the United States' global responsibilities." It was formed in 1997, and stopped operations by 2006. Some of its members moved to the American Enterprise Institute. Others went to the new Foreign Policy Initiative, created in 2009.

At the time of its formation, it considered the Clinton Administration's foreign policy to be "adrift", but also fought isolationist tendencies among American conservatives. It posed the question:

Does the United States have the vision to build upon the achievements of past decades? Does the United States have the resolve to shape a new century favorable to American principles and interests?
