Philip Zelikow

Philip D. Zelikow is the White Burkett Miller Professor of History at the University of Virginia, and was the director of its Miller Center of Public Affairs from 1998 to 2005. He is currently a member of the board for the global development program of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

From 2005 to 2007, he was Counselor of the United States Department of State, having previously been a Foreign Service Officer, and having coauthored a book with Secretary Condoleezza Rice. He was the executive director of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, better known as the "9/11 Commission." From 2001 to 2003, he was on the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. Earlier, he was on the National Commission on Federal Election Reform, chaired by Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford, as well as the executive director of the Markle Foundation Task Force on National Security in the Information Age. He has directed the of the Aspen Strategy Group, a policy program of the Aspen Institute.

Zelikow received his undergraduate degree from the University of Redlands, a law degree from the University of Houston, and his master's and Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Diplomacy at Tufts University.
