While the U.S. Army's M712 Copperhead was the first oeprational guided shell for 155mm howitzers, and performed well in the Gulf War, it is no longer in production. The shell was prohibitively expensive, and its laser guidance was less flexible than the GPS-assisted inertial navigation of its effective successor, the M982 Excalibur.

This shell was primarily fired by M109 howitzers.
