British citizen, born London 1939. BA in Modern Languages at UCW Aberystwyth, 1961, qualified as teacher 1962. French teacher to 1967, technical writer in Public Relations to 1975, thereafter self-employed games inventor, author, historian and consultant. Contributor and consultant to Games & Puzzles magazine 1972-1980. Invented board game Hare & Tortoise 1973, which won the first Spiel des Jahres award (1980) and is still published. Author of many books on card and board games, including The Oxford History of Card Games (1990), The Oxford History of Board Games (1999), and the Penguin Encyclopedia of Card Games (2000). Accredited consultant on games terminology to Oxford English Dictionary (see listing page ix of New Shorter OED, 1993).
