David Maxwell is a colonel in the United States Army Special Forces and a faculty member at the National War College. His current areas of research and writing include the teaching of unconventional warfare and the tradeoffs between publishing and secrecy regarding special operations. Maxwell's field experience is principally in Asia, particularly Korea, Japan and the Philippines.

He is a graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff College, School of Advanced Military Studies, and the National War College, National Defense University.
