Tarr, and three other Coast Guard sailors were assigned to the USS McKean, a World War One flush-deck destroyer that had been modified to be a fast amphibious transport. The McKean had four pair of large davits installed, to hand four landing craft. Vessels like the McKean were modified to carry a company of Marines.
