Formed in 1996 by Robert Borosage and Roger Hickey, the Campaign for America’s Future describes itself as "the strategy center for the progressive movement. Our goal is to forge the enduring progressive majority needed to realize the America of shared prosperity and equal opportunity that our country was meant to be." Its sister organization, the Institute for America's Future, created three years later, is more a policy research organization.

According to tax filings by the group, an IRS 527 organization, it received substantial startup funding from George Soros.
