Akhtar Mohammad Osmani (-2006) was a senior Taliban military commander and the designated successor to Mullah Omar. When killed by a U.S. airstrike, he headed Taliban forces in Southern Afghanistan.

He was a member of the Quetta Shura council and headed operations in the provinces of Uruzgan, Nimroz, Kandahar, Farah, Herat, and Helmand. He had also been responsible for the safety of Mullah Omar and Osama bin Laden.

While the Taliban initially denied his death, they later admitted it. [1]
