Airey Neave (1916-1979) was a British lawyer, soldier, and politician. After combat service in World War II, and being the first prisoner of war to escape from Colditz, he was a member of prosecution staff at Nuremberg Trials. In politics, he was Conservative shadow Minister for Northern Ireland, assassinated by Irish National Liberation Army shortly before Margaret Thatcher won office.
World War II
Following his successful escape, he became an officer of MI9, the British POW support and escape organization; he later wrote a book on it. At Nuremberg, he was given the honor of reading the indictments to the defendants, and later wrote another book describing his experiences and impressions of the prisoners.
